Mary and Daniel each gave Jennifer a hug as the final boarding call for Jennifer’s flight was announced. Her bags were on board, and it was time to go, but Jennifer kept stalling.

“Thanks again guys for letting me come visit.”

Mary smiled through the tears in her own eyes. “Thank you for coming, Jen. I’m so sorry it didn’t work out the way we’d planned. But after the baby’s born, you’ll have to come back. Promise?”

Jennifer grinned at her friend. “Try to keep me away!” She picked up her carry-on bag and turned toward the gate, her eyes scanning the terminal one more time. She didn’t know why she thought Jamie might have come to see her off. He had said he wouldn’t be there, but Jennifer couldn’t help hoping he’d changed his mind.

Jennifer waved again at the Whitfords and made her way onto the plane and her assigned seat. She was relieved to see the person in the seat next to her already deeply engrossed in a book. Jennifer settled into her seat, leaned back, and closed her eyes. As she opened them and stared at the back of the seat in front of her, she swallowed hard. This was tough. She blinked her eyes and wasn’t surprised to have several tears make their way down her face

The stewardess chose that time to stop at her seat. “You leaving home, miss? Feeling a little homesick, eh?”

Jennifer shook her head and wiped the tears away with her hand as she tried to smile. “No, actually I’m going home.”
